What do you do at Carefree?

Principal Social Worker in 16+ Leaving Care team. We work closely with the Local Authority 16+ Team with young people between the ages of 16 to 25.

What do you like about working at Carefree?

I really like working at Carefree because I love their values and the diverse work offered to young people both in care and leaving care. The staff are all so positive and focused on building relationship with young people offering them a wide range of groups, activities and 1:1 support. I love working with people and specifically enjoy the energy and thoughts of young people. Carefree is such a positive organisation, giving care experienced young people a voice, building positive relationships and multiple opportunities for inclusion. It is a safe place for our young people to be who they really are. Carefree is also supporting Separated Children Seeking Asylum here in Cornwall, their experiences brings other unique challenges. The Carefree staff are all very focused to ensure the young people have the best chance to settle, access education and meeting their social, religious and cultural needs.

Can you say a bit about your past experience and qualifications?

I am a qualified Social Worker, BSc (Hons) I qualified in 2011. I worked for the Local Authority with children and families for some years. I have also worked with St Petroc’s homeless charity working with rough sleepers and those vulnerable to homelessness. Most recently I was a team leader for We Are With You, working with people who had substance use difficulties and complex needs. I am skilled in using therapeutic interventions such as motivational interviewing and trauma informed working.

I find people fascinating and always seem to be able to offer something to the people I am working with. I always tackle work with a sense of humour, empathy and seeing the person as an individual. I have three adult children and two grandchildren, this experience helps immensely when supporting and offering time for young people and adults alike. I am a problem solver and like to create pathways through choice and discussions.

What do you enjoy doing when you are not working?

When I am not working I like spending time with family and friends. I love to be near the sea and love watching the waves. I enjoy making jewellery out of beads and clay. I like reading and learning new things to do with human behaviours and development.
