Museum of Carefree Launch!
On Monday evening last week, we all finally got a glimpse of the Museum of Carefree exhibition at Penlee House Gallery. Young people and their close friends, families, and workers, were invited to come to a private view with a warm welcome extended by the Penlee gallery team. Even the Mayor of Penzance attended! It was magical to have the gallery to ourselves and watch young people appreciating each other’s work that had been lovingly hung on the walls.
Amongst the Penlee gallery’s permanent collection of timeless oil paintings by the Newlyn School and fascinating artifacts the Museum of Carefree added an exciting addition to the Cornish art scene. The exhibition gives a beautiful and thought-provoking insight into the creativity of young people at Carefree and showcases a glimpse of their lives and perspectives on the world. Carefully curated by our resident artist practitioner Emma Saffy Wilson, the exhibition encompasses films directed by young people, ceramics inspired by the Japanese technique of Kintsugi, textiles, paintings, and written pieces including some by workers at Carefree. These works span two years of youth work sessions and we are extremely grateful to our friends at Cornwall Museums Partnership for supporting us in getting them out into the public arena.
The exhibition is now open to the public so please go and visit if you’re seeking a moment of peace or to have your heart warmed.
