It’s Our Day of Action 22 June 2022
Carefree was one of the young people’s charities involved in ‘It’s Our Day of Action’, which saw a 100 care experienced young people head to Parliament to urge MP’s to put their voices at the heart of social care reform following the recently published independent review and to hear more about the issues that affect the young people that they represent.
Carefree and Barnardos were there to specifically highlight the launch of a national campaign asking for free bus travel for all care experienced young people in England based on the work Carefree did with a pilot, video and evaluation report in their local campaign in Cornwall.
Our young people met with Cornish MP’s Steve Double and Cherilyn Mackory to discuss the issues facing care experienced young people in Cornwall. Cherilyn commented –
Today in Parliament, I had the pleasure of meeting with a lovely group of care experienced young people (those who have been or are currently in care) from Truro and Falmouth alongside the team at Barnardo’s.
It was great to learn more about the experiences of young people in care and to hear more about bold and broad action we can take to improve the lives of children and young people.
I look forward to learning more about their new ‘Transport for Freedom’ campaign, which calls for free travel for care experience young people in Cornwall.
I am aware that Council Council’s brilliant Together for Families team are working closely with local care charities on this campaign. I look forward to raising these important issues with Ministers so we can improve our care system for young people in Cornwall and across the UK.
